Safely remove a drive in Windows XP
Summary:
Safely remove a drive in Windows XP.
Disconnecting a drive without advising the computer to "Safely Remove" the hardware can cause data loss. Follow the procedure below to do this on Windows XP:
Begin by double-clicking on the Safely Remove icon in the System Tray (the collection of icons near the clock)

The Safely Remove Hardware program will open.

This will look different depending on what is connected. This window shows the driver for the devices that can be removed. Many show as a USB Mass Storage Device, but some may look different. Click the Stop button to choose the drive about to be removed.

This is the final window that appears. This is everything associated with the device about to be ejected. When the OK button is clicked, a message appears saying it is now safe to remove.
Occasionally, an error message appears. If that happens, close everything, and try again. If the problem still happens, power down the computer, and disconnect the drive when the computer is off.
