On tape drives that have a motor assisted insert/eject mechanism, try the following

Turn off the drive.
Hold the eject button in with one hand and turn the power switch back on with the other.
After the power is on, continue holding in the eject button for several seconds to insure that you have forced the eject cycle to occur.
