The error "Delayed Write Fail" can appear for a variety of reasons. The error is rarely related to a physical problem with the drive itself. Try the troubleshooting below to find a solution:
The drive should be connected directly to the computer, and not running through another device of any kind (either another drive, or FireWire/USB hub.)
If there are multiple drives connected to the same bus, disconnect them. Each drive takes a percentage of the total available bandwidth, so more than one can make a large difference.
Disable Write Caching.
Change the system's virtual memory settings.
To disable write caching, follow the procedure below:
In Windows Explorer, right-click the hard-disk, and then click Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the hard disk, and then click Properties.
Click the Policies tab.
Click to "Optimize for quick removal"
Click OK two times.
To change the virtual memory settings, follow the procedure below:
Under XP, Right click My Computer, select Properties, Advanced Tab, Settings Button under Performance, Advanced Tab under Performance Options, Change button under virtual memory. Click on the Custom Size option, and make sure the Initial and Maximum size values are set to 1 x current RAM and 1.5 x current RAM. Thus, if 512MB is currently installed in the computer, change the Initial value to 512MB and change the Max to 768MB (512 x 1.5 = 768). Reboot. If 1GB or more of RAM is installed, try disabling Virtual Memory altogether.
Under Windows 2000, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and click Performance Options. Under Virtual Memory, select Change. Change the Initial and Maximum values as for XP above. Click Set then click OK.
