Sundance Institute Filmmakers Edit Video Projects with LaCie Bigger Disks

September 9, 2004

Participants in the Sundance Institute's 2004 Filmmaker and Composer Labs edited 14 video and audio projects with LaCie Bigger Disks, plug-and-play external hard drives in sturdy portable enclosures that offer one terabyte of storage with FireWire and USB interfaces. The annual Sundance Labs offer emerging directors and screenwriters an opportunity to develop new work under the guidance of experienced filmmakers in an environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and risk-taking. Projects created in the Labs may appear in the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

"I encouraged our filmmakers and composers to use LaCie's Bigger Disk to edit their digital video films and music compositions," says Ian Calderon, Director of Digital Initiatives for the Sundance Institute. "The LaCie devices supplied our visiting artists with the vast storage they needed to edit streams of uncompressed video in real-time. The massive LaCie drives easily met the demanding schedule for our Composers Lab and Filmmakers Lab as they shot and edited selected scenes from their screenplays. The elegance of design and application of the LaCie drives allowed us to have a more fluid and dynamic creative process at the Labs."

"LaCie is pleased to help support emerging filmmakers and composers in the Sundance Institute's annual Labs, and the Bigger Disk is the most versatile editing tool for those working on both PCs and Macs," says Olivier Mirloup, LaCie Senior Product Manager. "Our recently announced Bigger Disk Extreme offers up to 1.6TB capacity with transfer rates of up to 85MB/s over FireWire 800 ports, ideal for editing large video or audio projects and easily transporting them between workstations."

LaCie Bigger Disks and Bigger Disk Extremes are available through LaCie authorized resellers, specialist stores and mail order partners with prices starting at $1199. Drives include a one-year US warranty and all cables necessary for operation. Also included is Silverlining Pro for Windows XP and Mac OS X/9, and SilverKeeper backup software for Mac OS X/9 users. Drive operation at 85MB/s speeds requires FireWire 800 interface and compatible computer.
