Mac OS 10.4.9 introduced a problem with the USB subsystem. Many USB storage devices can not function on Mac OS 10.4.9.
The best solution is to use the built-in software update to bring the computer to the latest version of Mac OS.
If this is not an option, there is a workaround available. Follow the procedure below to allow the use of USB drives without updating:
- Insert the Mac OS installation CD.
- Locate the Developer Tools installer, and double-click it.
- Install the new utilities.
With the drive connected, open the USB Prober application (this was installed into MacHD --> Developer --> Utilities) The drive will appear as expected now. This must be done each time a USB device is connected until the system is updated.
