Frequently Asked Questions
How do I disconnect the drive? Can I just unplug or power down the device while the computer is running?
While FireWire and USB are hot swappable they do need to be properly disconnected to prevent data corruption. Macintosh- You need to un-mount the drive before unplugging it or powering it off. To un-mount it, drag the disk icon to the Trash. (In OS X, the Trash icon will change to an Eject button). Once the drive icon disappears it is safe to unplug or power it down.
PC- Select the Eject/Remove Hardware icon on the task bar to unmount the device.
You will get a message that it is safe to disconnect or power off the device. (Older versions of Windows 98se did not include an eject icon. You have to just unplug it if no eject icon is available). Warning: Do not disconnect the USB or FireWire cable when the drive is reading or writing. Disconnecting while the drive is operating could cause the loss of data. Make sure that your drive is not reading or writing and that the activity LED is off before disconnecting the USB or FireWire cable.
